  • In the first six months of 2023, California has seen a 17% decrease in car accident deaths, down 330 compared to the first six months of 2022.
  • In 2022, the State of California reported 4,100 traffic fatalities, a slight decrease from the year before.
  • The IIHS reported that in 2021, there were a total of 4,285 car accident fatalities. 
  • Of those fatalities:
    • 1,502 car drivers or occupants were killed (35%)
    • 822 were drivers or occupants of pickups or SUVs (19%)
    • 39 deaths were large truck drivers or occupants (1%)
    • 586 motorcyclists died in 2021 (14%)
    • 124 were bicyclists (3%)
    • 1,108 pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles (26%)
  • The IIHS also found that in 2021, there were 2,362 single-vehicle crash fatalities. Multi-vehicle crashes resulted in 1,923 deaths.
  • 1,760 motorists killed were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
